Solus Review
Solus Identity Theft Protection claims to offer comprehensive protection from identity theft which includes prevention, detection and restoration. They remind customers that identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America today and provide education and free resources for victims. Other services include credit monitoring, restoration services, legal and emotional care, financial reimbursement and member services.
What We like
Solus has an A+ rating with the BBB and have a clean record with no complaints filed in the past 3 years.
Solus provides an abundance of useful information for anyone researching identity theft protection. Their website features a blog, articles and videos, FAQs, free resources and a list of helpful agencies. Solus provides value to people besides just their customers.
They offer legal and emotional care which is often an overlooked damage caused by ID fraud. This is offered to primary family members and includes 24/7 access to counselors, up to 3 in-person sessions to help with trauma and a cash advance if traveling.
What we don’t like
Solus only has one tier of protection plan. It’s “Platinum” service can be purchased with a fee of $169 per year, $359 for three years or $9.99 per month with a $59 enrollment fee. When we look at monthly costs for all three pricing options ($14.86/mo, $14.08/mo, $9.97/mo), there’s not much to get excited about. Especially when considering the lack of some critical monitoring features.
Additionally, there is no refund option if you would like to cancel after 30 days. And if you want to cancel the monthly payments, you must request a cancellation at least 5 days before the end of the month. Solus doesn’t provide enough guarantees with their service to be this strict on refunds. Furthermore, you’re not eligible for a full refund if you cancel within 30 days. No refund is offered for the monthly installment plan and only partial refunds are given for the one time fees. Solus does offer a full refund if requested within 3 days of starting the service.
The Solus recovery guarantee of $25K falls far below most competitors who offer up to $1 million. The protection offered is also more basic than comprehensive. They don’t offer services like personal record and dark web monitoring or protection for children. It’s also disappointing that Solus doesn’t offer any tiers of protection. By offering just one type of plan, they fail to meet the specific needs of different customers.
The Bottom Line
Solus offers a ton of great info about how identity theft works and how to reduce vulnerability but there isn’t a lot of guarantees about the effectiveness of their service. Furthermore, the lack of advanced monitoring and a meager $25K guarantee means their service falls short of competitors. There are no complaints filed to the BBB but this is likely due to a small number of customers. Solus protection is offered at a similar price point to low tier competitor packages without matching the assistance. Unless emotional care is more of a priority than comprehensive protection, look elsewhere for identity theft prevention and restoration.
How Solus Works
Solus refers to their service as comprehensive protection and breaks it down into five categories.
Education, Facts & Knowledge
- Provides education to increase your awareness, minimize risk as much as possible and deter thieves.
- Helps customers gain knowledge to make safer decisions regarding personal information while providing early stage alerts if a breach occurs.
- Provides expansive resources to prevent ID theft so readers have peace of mind.
Credit Monitoring
- 24/7 customer support and access to credit report and score for all three bureaus.
- Relies on the Trans Union’s Fraud Victim Assistance Department to help with credit fraud resolution.
- Service available for primary customer’s SSN only – other members may be added (at a discounted monthly fee).
Full Restoration Services
- Simplifies the procedures and documents required for identity recovery.
- Deal with local, state & federal authorities and the FTC for timely restoration.
- Drivers license and passport replacement.
- Translation services for traveling customers.
- Service available for primary customer and all other immediate family.
Legal & Emotional Care
- Provides an initial consultation and legal document review.
- 24/7 access to emotional trauma support and up to 3 in-person sessions if needed.
- Cash advances provided for travelers.
- Service available for primary customer and all other immediate family.
Reimbursement for Expenses & Lost Wages
- Up to $25,000 in reimbursement available for legal fees, refilling documents, long distance calls & postage.
- Up to $1,000 in reimbursement for lost wages for five weeks.
- Service available for primary customer’s SSN only – other members may be added (at a discounted monthly fee).
Solus Plans & Pricing
Solus protection offers just one plan that has three different pricing and subscription options. The absence of tiered plans makes it difficult to know if you’re getting the best possible service. Especially since the list of services is not as robust as other companies.
