MyLife Review

MyLife is primarily a company that helps you correct information on your background checks with identity theft coverage being just one component of what they offer. It seems as though they use CSID white labeled services, meaning they resell certain features with their own branding attached. However, it’s difficult to discern the specifics of how they go about accomplishing their goals on their website.

Through monitoring your online reputation, they can track and identify any type of mistakes with your data or suspicious criminal behavior and allow you to set it right. They also offer a $1 million insurance policy should you become a victim when you’re signed up with their plan.

What We Like My Life positives

MyLife certainly has the right idea by encouraging people to learn where their information is and who’s tracking it. They claim to have about 55 million customers and businesses which suggests a certain amount of competency when it comes to providing a service online users want. As difficult as it might be to view less-than-flattering information about your life, it needs to be done so you’re aware of the risks in every part of your identity from financial to personal. People might be surprised to see their data turn up in odd places with either extremely outdated or just plain wrong information.

MyLife states that you can manipulate your information in just one click. Even if you’re not under the microscope of a criminal right now, it can help you purge or correct what is out there. Plus it gives you a sense of what’s happening out there in cyber space that employers, potential partners and landlords all have access to. They also offer a limited plan for free which is a handy feature if you’re just starting poke around for yourself online.

What We Don’t Like My Life negatives

Unfortunately, many people are not happy with the way MyLife operates. The actual number of people signed up varies depending on which source you check, suggesting some questioning about their reporting of numbers. Numerous complaints plus a class-action lawsuit against the company make us unable to recommend these services. It has a D+ rating on the BBB and its accreditation was revoked. The lawsuit was based on the company’s practice of charging people for a full year when people thought they were signing up on a monthly basis.

Others claim their information was sold or that they weren’t able to see their background. Many say they were bombarded with aggressive emails and spam, and the LA Times criticized the company for its marketing. They also do not offer 24/7 support or help with lost documents or emergencies.

The Bottom Line

It does not appear to be a good time to use this company right now, and they’ll likely have some major work to do before they climb out of their current situation. Given that their site is not particularly transparent about pricing, nor do they offer credit monitoring, there are much better services than MyLife. The only way you might consider using them is if you already perform background checks with them and find they have comprehensive information you can’t find anywhere else.

How It Works

How MyLife Works

This service does not offer many of the standard features like credit monitoring or public record searches. What it does do is give you more information about your reputation so you can preserve it or remove derogatory remarks about you on outside sources.

Website Monitoring: MyLife allows you to see which sites have your information with the option of removing it. Restructure your public profile so you come across in the best light to legitimate parties who might be interested. If there’s some sort of theft, breach or hack, it will send you an alert so you can take immediate action. It does this constantly with an advanced algorithm that can see when your information has been newly revealed. It aims to keep your information as private as possible and your data safe from the many illegitimate parties out there.

See Who Sees You: Ensure that it’s only friendly people checking up on your information and not a thief who could be operating from anywhere around the world.

Insurance: Receive $1 million in protection guarantee which will cover lost wages, attorney or court fees and illegal withdrawals from your bank account.

Education: MyLife updates their site consistently with new information about ways criminals may be trying to get at your information. They also address common problems facing people of all ages today when trying to manage their online identity — an increasingly difficult thing to do.

Plans & Pricing

MyLife Plans & Pricing

It’s unclear how much this service costs as they entice you to sign up for free through Facebook or by filling out your general information first. Buried in the FAQs are the prices listed below, and you’ll need to contact them to cancel. If you sign up through Facebook, it should be noted they can see your profile, general interests and friends which can be invaluable for any company trying to glean more information about you.

  • 24/7 Website Monitoring
  • Ability to Change Your Information
  • Public Image Rebuilding
  • Alerts of Information Theft
  • Ability to See Who Views Your Report

MyLife History & Additional Information

Started in 2002 by Jeffrey Tinsley, this company has definitely had its share of ups and downs. In 2007, Oak Investment Partners staked MyLife with $25 million. In 2009, it was reported that they had over 18 million unique visitors every month, which certainly caught people’s attention too. It’s been featured on Fox, Lifetime, BBC and the Wall Street Journal. In 2014, it was named to AlwaysOn Global 250 list as a promising private company. Despite the many testimonials on their own site though, it’s difficult to find people who have anything good to say about the company. The lack of attention given to their reputation on the BBB should also say something about the nature of their team. It’s possible that they’re getting their act together, but it’s not consistent or transparent enough to recommend in good conscience today.

The people at MyLife.com are antisemitic, homophobic, Islamaphobic, or misleading. I found a friend’s name on there. Let’s call him Jim. MyLife.com says in bold letters that Jim “DOES have Arrest or Criminal Records.” Below Jim’s name is a huge orange bubble that says “View Jim’s Court, Arrest, or Criminal.” The only “record” Jim has is maybe one or two speeding tickets after driving for over 20 years. MyLife.com defines a criminal record to include traffic tickets. Although legally a traffic ticket can be criminal, Mylife’s bundling of speeding tickets with “Arrest or Criminal Records,” in the overall context of the website’s presentation, and then relying on the word “or” to assert the defense of truth, is clearly misleading.

Terrible company and product. Failed to notify me in advance of taking $120 from my account. When called was informed it was an auto renewal and nonrefundable. I immediately canceled. No company should ever take money from another’s account without advance notification. On top of that the customer service rep hung up on me! Bad business to say the least.
